Rising DisCom Dues: Where is this going to end?

Tamil Nadu Electricity Board Contract Workers Protest

End of August, Electricity Distribution Companies reach a new height, in performance.

Outstanding payment dues to renewable power generators alone reach 10,900 Crores across the country. Only to Renewable generators, not including other types of generators!

August also saw Government of India accepting to give TANGEDCO, one of the DisComs, a loan of nearly Rs.30,000 crores to set right its debt laden portfolio. But what worries most of us, the tax payers, is that, will this save the ailing Discom?

What is the point in helping a leaky boat. However much you keep trying, it is going to continue leaking! The first effort should be to stop the leak, identify where and why it started leaking and then move on to support it.

But, till today, there has not been any effort in plugging the leak anywhere. Instead, we are only ploughing in more and more money. What good is that going to bring to the company or to the people?

Rs.30,000 Crores of tax payer money is again going to go down the drain. Instead of conducting a third party audit into the affairs of the company, the DisCom is being allowed a free run. Result, there is no commitment from the company that the company will not run into financial troubles again or that they will mend their ways when they buy power or that they will behave in accordance with law!

No commitments whatsoever!

TANGEDCO is a big violator of all laws, including Human Rights! Please see the photo. It is a common and well known fact that they never report accidents that happen in their premises. Even if people die in accidents, just to avoid paying compensation, they show it as if it has happened out of their premises and not during the job that is undertaken for them.

Worser still is the fact that all risk taking jobs are always done by contractors and not by regular employees. So no obligation whatsoever!

TANGEDCO is currently having more than a thousand cases filed against them or they have filed against their customers at various forums. No company in the world files so many cases against their own customers! And neither is vice versa true. What is more interesting is, they are facing or have faced a few contempt cases against the company for disobeying court orders!

So if you want tax payer money, then you should be a company that holds public money, faces thousands of court cases and do not obey court orders!
