The Elections in Tamil Nadu 2021.

Tamil Nadu Elections 2021 for the sixteenth legislative Assembly of the state, voting phase is over!

We have done our job! The Election Commission and the administration has to do its job now. If required the central government representative in the state, the Governor, has to do his job, properly! Without politicking!

Voting was over yesterday (6 Apr 2021) but we need to wait almost another month (2 May) for the results to come in! One of those many skewed thinking that plagues our country and its administration.

But then, the voting itself, was very well done. Perfect organization, great crowd handling, accessibility and many other factors. Election commission, the police and the administration certainly require three cheers for a wonderful job done. They have become masters in the trade!

The political parties too have been very matured. Many of them who had access at the ground level such as the AIADMK, did not spare any tool at its disposal to bring voters in. Phone calls, whatsapp messages, sms and of course, personal invitations, all added to bring in the voters to the booths. The voter percentage is not a real measure of the enthusiasm amidst the people for the elections.

Many of my friends have been calling in and asking me about what I think of the elections and its outcome.

My immediate reaction was that we never had such an ambiguous election where the electorate are at a loss to choose their candidate. Whom to choose was the question, even a day prior to the voting day. With the party in power and its candidates, having done a reasonable job in the last four years, there were not too many negatives. Baring a few major incidents such as the Pollachi and the pervasive corruption that has increased in its depth and penetration.

Individual candidates did enjoy substantial clout in the locality. For a party that has been in power for ten long years, it was too agile on the ground and pretty responsive!

Though DMK had lost much of its sheen, it did stand out as a credible alternate. The last few days of the campaigning showed them in a better light with positive approach being the tagline. It talked of what it would do and how it would keep TN’s flag flying high!

The surprise could be the Makkal Nedhi Mayyam. During my informal discussions, I found more people supporting MNM and not the other two major parties! Though I would like to count it out as a sample in a specified group and cannot be treated as a purely random sample. But there is a heavy possibility that we have surprise in store.

The same is the case with Naam Tamilar which could break into the Assembly with a bang.

All said and done, the elections point to a five year of indecisive party rule. Is that good or bad?

I think it is for the good and would be the real democracy! Nobody should wield the power to rule unequivocally. A democracy is stronger when there is ambiguity amongst rulers. Not in the law, of course!

If it is a hung assembly, there are a few who will be happy. And I am one of them!
